This classical school of Japanese swordsmanship dates back to the 16th century and was created from the influence of the Warring States period. Designed as an alternative to the more aggressive schools of the time, this school was named the Life Giving Sword because it focuses on preserving life through achieving a high level of skill and precision, developing a calm and focused mind, and training with a mindset focused more on not losing a fight instead of winning it. This koryu school is rarely offered in North America and has a long and prestigious history in Japan, being the official school of swordsmanship used by the Tokugawa Shogunate.

We practice with fukuro shinai and iaito (dull blade katana) and utilize assorted weapons to further our understanding of the sword. The curriculum uses Kihon (basic movement exercises) and kata (choreographed technique sequences) as it’s practice method, and through repetition, we gain the insights the art has to offer. Through our training we strive to deepen our awareness and learn better control over ourselves and our actions, helping us to refine our character and become more compassionate in our daily interactions.
