Shodo
Shodo is Chinese-origin visual arts of writing characters and black ink wash painting in various concentration.
The class will start on January 14th (Thursday) at 2:00 PM (held at the same time every week), 2027.
Fees: First session: $40 / 1 hour 30 minutes, $25/hr from the second session onwards

Yukari has been fascinated with calligraphy since childhood, and it has been a part of her life. When she became engaged to her Canadian husband, she considered becoming a calligraphy teacher in Canada and developed a strong desire to spread the beauty of this unique art form. Thus 2006 to 2008, she enrolled in the Master’s Program at the Japan Educational Shodo Art School（日本教育書道芸術学院 師範科). There, she obtained a calligraphy instructor certificate. Her talent in calligraphy was demonstrated when she won the Excellence Award at the 32nd In-House calligraphy competition. Furthermore, in January 2009, she won the Excellence Award at the 33rd New Year Calligraphy Contest. In 2009, Yukari moved to Ottawa, Canada with her Canadian husband. Despite being a busy mother of three children and raising a family, Yukari’s creative spirit has not waned and she continues to create her works. She has participated in the Calligraphy Canada competition since 2010 and has attended the competition every year since. In the past, she has received numerous gold, bronze, and honorable mentions. Her work is collected by many private patrons in Canada and Japan. In addition, some of Ottawa’s calligraphy teachers acquire her work as a model for their students. Yukari, a mother of three and former teacher at an Ottawa Japanese Language School, is more determined than ever to promote calligraphy to young children as well as adults. She believes that calligraphy is a means of dialogue with the self and a way to create a time for self reflection which is much needed for children in the age of social media at its height. With this aspiration in mind, she is looking for new ways to make calligraphy more approachable to the people of Ottawa. In the summer of 2025, Yukari taught calligraphy to children in international programs in Ottawa —not only in Japanese classes, but also in French and Spanish ones. She also took part in various markets to share the beauty and appeal of calligraphy with communities across Canada.
